taipei is too big to be completely walkable, so i took public transport a few times to get around. the buses were similar enough to other big cities, but the metro system was probably the best i'd ever been on. it was super clean and comfortable as you'd expect from how the city is above ground, with perfect phone reception throughout and very appreciated air conditioning. each platform had areas marked out where you should queue to get onto the trains, with space to the side for people to alight. there were also lights on each platform which would change colours to indicate when a train was approaching. as someone who can't read chinese i found everything really easy to navigate, and this was particularly true when going from place to place. each station had their name written in both chinese and english characters, but crucially they also had a number, to go along with a particular colour depending on the line. so if, i don't know, you get a little confused between the words songshan, zhonshang and sanchong you can just look at the numbers on the green, red and orange lines and look out for G19, R11 and O25 instead. when i compare it to the london underground it really is night and day.
